What technique did the artist use in this artwork

How to observe a work of art
René Magritte, The Son of Man, 1964.
Sometimes, when we visit a museum or an art gallery, it happens that we have to face some works that we do not know how to interpret. What do you mean by this?,what do I have to pay attention to?,what other artist could you relate it to?
It is true that sometimes the interpretation of a work is very personal and subjective, but having certain tools can help to “get more juice” from what we are observing, what technique did the artist use in this artwork. Some keys for observation may be the following:
- Materials and teniques: Materials and teniques are basic, since it is the means of expression that the artist has osen and the language through whi he speaks to us. It is not the same to create a quickly made watercolor than an oil painting, mu slower in its elaboration; modeling a clay sculpture is not the same as casting an iron one. But the materials and teniques are not only important in the creation process, but they are also fundamental in the final result: compared to a luminous watercolor of transparent colors, an oil of opaque and heavy colors; compared to a rough and porous surface of ceramics, a bright and polished surface of metal. All this becomes especially important when several materials are mixed in the same work, because then a game of textures and elaboration processes is produced that enri the language of the artist.
- Colours: Colors have their own language, whi is often linked to certain meanings that society has attributed to them. However, in a work of art many times more than one color is involved, generating romatic harmonies or just the opposite.
- Shapes: Shapes are the basic elements with whi the artist creates his work. While some opt for an abstraction in whi they ay with geometric figures, others resort to figurative images with perfectly recognizable elements; While some use sinuous forms in whi the curved line predominates, others use broken forms in whi straight lines predominate.
- The format: the format and size of the work are also other elements to take into account, not only because of the tenical difficulties that large or very small works can cause, but also because its purpose may be conditioned by this factor. Thus, for exame, a large painting may be destined for a museum room, but not for a private person's room.
- Influences and relationships: It is also important to establish links with other artists. The influences of other artists can be more or less conscious in a creator and it is possible that we can establish relationships that go beyond reality. However, regardless of the real existence or not of an influence at the time of creation, it may be important for the viewer to establish these links to enri their experience and enjoy wating the work more.
At Croma Cultura we believe that it is necessary to educate our gaze to observe art, that it is possible to learn to see it and that only by contemating art can we learn to observe art. For this reason, on April 9 at 7:00 p.m. we will be in the gallery Feeding Art commenting on his III Window to Malasaña< /strong>
