Swiss craftsmen in the XIX century invented a way to keep the readability of the dial of pocket watches in the dark - the hands and indexes are treated with luminous substance, barium sulfide. Today you can find luminescent backlighting in the collections of TAG Heuer, Breitling, Corum and other leaders in the watch industry - read more in the article Best luminous watch that glows in the dark. Manufacturers treat indexes, hands and bezels of watches with light-accumulating compositions.
Casio's G-Shock collection is not only remarkable for its fantastic durability. The bright backlighting is a constant element of the G-Shock since the classic DW-5600E model of 1996. A year earlier, the Casio Group introduced its development Casio Illuminator, which was named Foxfire for the Japanese domestic market. Powerful LED-lighting later received a modification of Super Illuminator, which is used today in all new watches of the series and, as we have already written, is activated automatically in case of insufficient light.

Also in Casio watches, such as the Baby-G series, models with neon backlighting have been released. An LED embedded in the case illuminates the dial markings with a bright glow that simulates ultraviolet light.
In order to make the Casio G-Shock series timepieces with impeccable functionality, Casio has developed a special light-emitting compound for the indices and hands. The luminescent coating with a green glow that is used in conjunction with the LED backlighting is called Neobrite. A prime example of a watch that combines both backlights is the stylish camouflage-cased Casio G-Shock GA-700CM-2A.
